Job Title: Village Coordinator

Status: Full-Time (40 hours/week) or Part-Time (20 hours/week)

Pay: $15 - $17/hour

Description:

The mission of SquareOne Village (SOV) is to create self-managed communities of cost-effective tiny homes for people in need of housing. The organization currently manages two villages: Opportunity Village Eugene (OVE) and Emerald Village Eugene (EVE). We are seeking to hire a Village Coordinator to work with the residents of OVE and EVE to maintain essential functions of the Village, and to act as the agent of SOV in providing oversight and support to the Village. The ideal candidate has excellent communication and organizational skills, along with some experience in working with the unhoused or another vulnerable population.

Opportunity Village Coordinator

(20 hours/week)

Project Overview

OVE opened in 2013 as a transitional micro-housing community for otherwise unhoused individuals and couples, with a goal of tranistioning residents to more permanent housing options. The simple shelters are supported by a common cooking area, restrooms with showers, laundry, and a heated yurt that serves as a common living room. The residents participate in a weekly Village meeting and elect a Village Council to manage day-to-day operations. They pay a $35/month utility fee and contribute 10 hours per week to help operate and maintain the village. The property is leased to SOV from the City of Eugene.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist and Advise the Village and its leadership on the:

  • adherence to and enforcement of the Village Manual and the Operating Agreement with the City of Eugene

  • maintenance of meeting minutes, attendance records, and participation records

  • facilitation of OVE Village meetings and committee meetings

  • organization and maintenance of gate duty and bathroom cleaning schedules

  • management of incident reports

  • scheduling and supervision of safety inspections and fire drills.

  • Organize purchase of supplies with volunteers and pick-up of donated materials

  • Maintain village e-mail, phone, computer, printer, and file system for all Village records

  • Build effective relationships with residents and encourage leadership development

  • Staff meetings of the Village Council, Vetting Committee, and other committees as needed

  • Conduct resident move-in interviews and house move-in/out check-list

  • Coordinate weekly maintenance tasks and quarterly inspection of all facilities, utilizing volunteer labor whenever possible

  • Serve as a point of contact for outside community groups and services that provide assistance or training to OVE residents

  • Respond to community conflicts and disputes on site as needed

  • Provide formal written notice to residents of non-compliance with OVE rules

  • Assist residents with their transition goals in coordination with MSW intern and volunteers

  • Report regularly to SOV staff regarding OVE

  • Assist with other administrative and fundraising tasks of OVE as needed

 

Emerald Village Coordinator

(20 hours/week)

Project Overview

EVE opened in 2018 to provide permanent housing for people with very low-incomes through tiny houses that are safe, livable, and affordable within a stable community setting. Residents are members of a housing co-operative, which is still in its early development stages. Residents attend a monthly Village meeting, participate in at least one committee, and complete 10 sweat equity hours per month. They pay $250 - 350/month which covers utilities, maintenance, all other operating costs, and a share in the co-op. Many residents are living on a fixed income due to age or disability. The property is leased to EVE from SOV. Five of the twenty-two homes are still under construction.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist and advise the Village and its leadership on the:

  • adherence to and enforcement of the leases, bylaws, and policies and procedures of EVE.

  • development of new policies and procedures

  • the maintenance of meeting minutes, attendance records, and participation records

  • the facilitation of EVE Village meetings and committee meetings

  • coordination of house maintenance and alteration requests

  • Organize purchase of supplies and pick-up of donated materials

  • Maintain village e-mail, phone, computer, printer, and file system for all Village records

  • Provide basic bookkeeping (provide monthly financial reports to administrative committee; notify membership committee when a member is in arrears).

  • Build effective relationships with residents and encourage leadership development

  • Conduct resident move-in interviews and house move-in/out check-list

  • Serve as a point of contact for outside community groups and services that provide assistance or training to EVE residents

  • Respond to community conflicts and disputes on site as needed

  • Provide formal written notice of non-compliance with lease and “for cause” terminations

  • Report regularly to SOV staff regarding EVE

  • Assist with other administrative tasks of EVE as needed

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working with those who have been homeless or marginalized

  • Demonstrated experience in administrative duties, community relations, and collaboration with other local community organizations and initiatives

  • Commitment to social justice for people living in poverty, and a thoughtful approach to strategies for achieving it. Interest or experience in living in community is a plus

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds, and ability to stay neutral and unbiased in approaching conflict

  • Working knowledge of word processing and data entry software (EVE coordinator will need to regularly use Quickbooks)

  • Lives in Eugene/Springfield with access to a vehicle and Oregon driver’s license
